Well, when I was not at my parents or working, I spend a lot of time in England! My favourite trip was the one to see the Royal Wedding with my close friends.

#WEverb11 - Prompt #1

What is #WEverb11?

From the Website:
#WEverb11 is a set of 31 prompts meant to encourage reflection on the past year (2011) and look forward to the coming year (2012).

The first prompt is

Choose one word.
Encapsulate the year 2011 in one word. Explain why. Imagine it’s one year from today, what would you like the word to be that captures 2012 for you?

Looking back, 2011 was just so damn EXHAUSTING!

I was stretching myself thin and have worn myself out far too many times... but it was necessary.
My parents got sick at the end of 2010, both of them, within 3 months of each other. And both with the same diagnosis: Cancer. Well, crap! My father had to undergo surgery, emergency surgery, chemo and radiation - which made him really sick and is responsible for a lot of health problems he will have for the rest of his life (I was not aware of the really bad side effects cancer treatments can have). My mother had surgery and chemo. Combined with the ongoing fear for my dad's life, it really took a toll on her. Both of them have been in hospital quite some time in 2011, and, obviously, I was there for them. Looking back, I feel like I spend the majority of my time on the highway. I had a job, an apartment, parents in 2 different hospitals 200km away, my parent's house to look after, and a long-distance relationship. Phew, can you say TIME MANAGEMENT?

Luckily, my parents are doing better now. I was able to move to be with my partner this August (even though it is only temporary) and I cherish every moment with him. I learned that life is short, often shorter than you think. I learned that I can produce a strength I did not know I have. I learned that people can rely on me. I learned that I have awesome friends. I learned that I am a survivor.

2012, I hope my word is LIGHTHEARTED.

As I had quite a lot of unexpected, terrible calls this year, I have a problem not to expect a catastrophe everytime the phone rings. I am working hard at regaining my childlike trust in the world and at enjoying the moment. At some point, I feared I had lost my smile.... but it is back.

August Primark Haul

I used my time at Starbucks wisely and uploaded one of my August videos for you *patts herself on head* Good girl!

Sorry about the mess in the background, we were living in this room with 2 people and not enough storage...
I seem a bit quiet but I guess I was just afraid that our landlord would come home unexpectedly (I don't like being watched while I film a video!).

Where the heck are you?

I know, I know.....

I started with high hopes for the October Photography Challenge. I took a lot of pictures. But then? Life happened. We had to move (including a transition weekend where we had literally no home.... and only figured our 1 day before what to do and where to go). Now we are in the new place, which is very central, great area and public transport, very posh.... but no internet. NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

My local starbucks knows me pretty well already. And the library. And the university. But still, I miss having internet at home (we have an internet dongle, but that's not the same - and expensive).

(View from our window. Yes, we live really close to Starbucks! I have no idea where the horses go, but they pass by nearly every day and I am always glued to the window.)

October Photo Challenge Day 2: What I wore

Several people commented on the "top" I was wearing on day 1 (thanks a lot for the lovely comments, it made my day and I will most definitely look into jewel colors for my fall wardrobe).

Two observations:

Oh look, it's a dress!
and
Oh look, she is wearing the same stuff as the day before!

To which I can only say yup, guilty as charged. I moved to the UK mid-august and I didn't bring any "summery" clothes with me - after all, it's the UK, right? Umbrellas, fog, no sunshine.... (which was really true for my first weeks here, it was dreadful!).
Remind me to put up some pics from that firsts weeks in comparison to the pics from the last few days, cause it was *singsongvoice* gor-geous!

It was hotter than in Greece (which lead to the clever tweet:
"Dear Greece, if you pay your bills, you can have your weather back. Love, the UK" *ROTFL).

Anyway, I picked up the dress as a "going out" dress (with tights or leggings) and I was so happy to have it (+ another one) during this untypical fantastic weather.

And, as I like making videos (obviously, just check my last entries...) here is one especially for you:

October Photo Challenge: Day 1: Self-Portrait

I am taking part in the October Photography Challenge with a lot of other lovely ladies (are we only ladies? Or do we have menfolk among us?). If you want to know more, check out the link!
Thanks to Our wired lives for the organization and That Wife for bringing it to my attention.

So, the topic for Oct 1 was "Self-Portrait".
That's me:

Of course, I started to fool around...

Nice meeting you!

What's in my Travel Makeup Bag

This video costs me my last nerves. I was happy when I found it on my harddrive, as it was already edited an stuff, simply not uploaded (it's from spring, go figure!), so I thought that this would be smooth sailing.
Wrong. Honestly, I tried uploading it for a whole week! Youtube was acting up and it would always abort (after uploading for 3-4 hours *facepalm*).

Well, I hope you like it!

Spring haul in summer? Yeah, I'm late......

This is a video I filmed in April, uploaded in May and finally blog about now.... shame on me!

So, here is the video for your viewing pleasure:

I talk about the fading "gold" problem... here you can see what I mean:

<-- not happy with that -->
It's a pity as I really like the rings, especially the "Love" ring. I am even thinking of having it recreated on etsy or with a local artist... at least for the stacking rings I found a lot of great options on etsy, if you like them, definitely check it out!

Ok, moving on to my Lush purchase:
I really like the "Angels on Bare Skin" - but I am just to lazy for it. I prefer my products in a tube, premixed, easy for travelling.

"Celestial" - I did not buy it. It is quite expensive and I am fine with my cream right now.

Mask "The sacred truth" - love it.
Why I think it should be called "The SCARY truth":
Point taken. You are welcome.

So, tell me... any recent lush purchases? Did you ever have a ring made from scratch? Was it expensive? Did you ever look like Hulk after applying a mask? Curious minds want to know!

A new Body Shop Product - Body Butter DUO

Here is a video for you about this cool new Body Shop Duo Body Butter:

I really like this concept. I use the thicker part for my elbows, knees and after shaving my legs, the light cream for all other parts of my body. No complaints so far.

As stated in the video, I bought mine in the UK for 5 GBP due to the great offer combined with the magazine coupon (you can still get the magazine for 6 more days!).
The US TBS website lists the duo body butters as out of stock, unfortunately. They are having an offer as well, 15$ instead of 18$, so if you are interested you might want to check if your local TBS has this offer as well!

The 4 scents are:
floral acai (that's the one I have, very floral, summery, girly)
vanilla
macadamia
sweet pea

Have fun!

Benefit

Hello my lovelies,

I know, I know, silence... but the situation is still quite tough, and I am lacking the energy to blog.

I uploaded another video at the end of april, so at least you can see me :)

It was filmed at the beginning of april, so the birthday I am talking about is over. In the end, I didn't ask for any of the products but I am still thinking of buying the eyebrow pencil.
We shall see!

P2 lip passion gloss

Hello everyone, long time no see!

I have a short video for you:

The reason for my absence is not that I don't want to blog or film any more, in fact, I had a lot of fun filming this short sequence.

I am still having problems with my internet connection, I use an internet stick with a limit of 5GB per month (which I always exceed, even without youtube!). After this, my internet is really slow (like, stone age slow).

Furthermore, someone close to my heart is quite unwell and we were going through a difficult time. Thank you for sticking with me and thanks to all of you who reached out to me. Any positive thoughts, vibes and prayers are still truly appreciated :)
Life is short, sometimes even shorter than you think, so I encourage you to tell the people in your life that you love them! They are in your heart because you let them in... so there must be a reason, right?

Love you all!
*hugs*

Aufgepasst: Glamour Shopping Card!

My new fun nailpolish shade

Are you also just done with winter? I definitely am. When I spotted this nailpolish, the color screamed "Pick me up! Spring is coming! I am fun!".
What should I do - I mean, I could leave the poor little thing behind, right?

Unfortunately, this is a limited edition nailpolish, and even more unfortunate, only available in Germany, Austria and Switzerland, as far as I know.
It is Essence's "04 Roy's Red" (Limited Edition: "Whoom! Boooom!" (inspired by MAC's Wonder Woman LE, I guess)).

Sorry for the terrible hand shots (a hand model, I am not).
Roy's Red is a red (really?) with a strong pink undertone. Very easy to apply, shiny and pretty!
Makes me want to throw on a summer dress and go for an icecream - go away cold!
According to Paddy from IuA, it is a dupe for Essie's "Wife goes on" (so this is my tip for my US and UK and where-ever readers!).

Moleskine special limited edition - le petit prince!

Moleskine presents a new limited edition notebook - a "Le Petit Prince" notebook!

(YT Video)

Isn't it simply stunning?
Antoine de Saint-Exupéry's "Le petit Prince" will always hold a special place in my heart, as I played the fox in our school play (if I happen to find the pics, I will scan them and show you, pinky promise!).
It was a great honour to say the famous line
It is only with the heart that one can see rightly; what is essential is invisible to the eye.
I was always quite worried that I would mess it up ;-)

I have a "Le petit prince" watch from Italy, and some nice notebooks and pens.... but a moleskine notebook is a totally different story and I am truly tempted.

Thanks to Geek in Heels for her post, head over to her blog to see more pics!

Things that make me happy # 2

This postcard, sent by my dear friend R:

It says:
"It sparkles,
it is useless,
I want it!"

This pretty much sums it up - do you know the feeling that you want something because it is just so *puuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuurtey*? I am able to resist sometimes, more often recently as I want to move soon.

Generally, I am not an impulse buyer, I have to think long and hard about spending my money (and then I go back and happily purchase whatever I lusted over in the first place ;) ). But if I am in a good mood, the money can slip through my fingers more easily, especially if I am in a country with a different currency (yes, I am looking at you, Great Britain!). This is just the small stuff though.
For big ticket items, I like to research hours and hours in the internet to get the best deal on the best item.

What about you? Sparkle queen(king?)? Impulse buyer? Hermit and non-shopper?

A lush gift set for me!

I got a wonderful surprise in the mail yesterday: a lush package!
Want to see what's in it? Here, help me unwrap it:

(Youtube video)

The Sparkle set contains a shower jelly named sweetie pie and a glitter bar ("shimmy shimmy").

Today, I tested both products and I had so much fun using the shower jelly. I never used one before, just poked them in the lush store as I said in the video, so I was really curious! I did not crush it but used the whole thing by rubbing it over my body (a task much more difficult as it sounds, considering I had this whobbly, slippery blob in my hand - I swear it is alive!). It lathered up fine. The smell is fruity, quite artificial, but not overpowering, and, sniffing my arm now, I can tell you it's almost gone. My skin feels quite soft (and I just realize I did not moisturize at all, so this is a small miracle!). Even though the sweetie pie shower jelly is sparkly, no glitter stayed on my body.

But fear not, sparkle fan, there is the second product: the shimmy shimmy glitter bar. Which, surprisingly enough, gives you a really soft skin with tons of glitter! (Who would have guessed that!) I used it just on my décolletage and I look like freaking Edward Cullen.
It really gives a ton of golden glitter while leaving the skin soft and pampered. I can see me reaching for it Carneval and New Year's Eve, and maybe also for more private occasions....

Thank you Y. for sending me such a beautiful gift!

Dialect Vlog

I don't have such a cute little addition like That Wife, but nevertheless I wanted to take part in the Dialect Vlog. I enjoy hearing all the different pronounciations! Here is the "non-native speaker"- dialect (yes, I am fully aware that such a thing does not exist... at least not only one form ;) )

These are the words/questions:
Aunt, Route, Wash, Oil, Theater, Iron, Salmon, Caramel, Fire, Water, Sure, Data, Ruin, Crayon, Toilet, New Orleans, Pecan, Both, Again, Probably, Spitting image, Alabama, Lawyer, Coupon, Mayonnaise, Syrup, Pajamas, Caught

* What is it called when you throw toilet paper on a house?
* What is the bug that when you touch it, it curls into a ball?
* What is the bubbly carbonated drink called?
* What do you call gym shoes?
* What do you say to address a group of people?
* What do you call the kind of spider that has an oval-shaped
* body and extremely long legs?
* What do you call your grandparents?
* What do you call the wheeled contraption in which you carry
* groceries at the supermarket?
* What do you call it when rain falls while the sun is shining?
* What is the thing you change the TV channel with?

Things that make me happy #1

After all your fantastic comments, here is the first thing that makes me happy.
Just a small, silly thing...

...
fun colored socks! Yeah!

I never had fun socks when I was a kid and only discovered how much I love them when I moved out(my mum said if she had knewn how happy that would have made me, I'd have had a whole drawer full of them!).

I don't see the point in spending a fortune on socks, so I only have a few, cheap pairs - striped, with toes (fun but uncomfortable!), Harry Potter, Snoopy, Hello Kitty, Christmas, Halloween...

Which side do you belong to? Only white tennis socks? Only black socks? A rainbow of colors?

PersonalDNA - Your true self revealed

Kimberly Michelle blogged about this new personality test, PersonalDNA.
If you have 10 Minutes to kill, take a turn and tell me your result!

I am an..

which means

  • Your imagination, self-reliance, openness to new things, and appreciation for utility combine to make you an INVENTOR.
  • You have the confidence to make your visions into reality, and you are willing to consider many alternatives to get that done.
  • The full spectrum of possibilities in the world intrigues you—you're not limited by pre-conceived notions of how things should be.
  • Problem-solving is a specialty of yours, owing to your persistence, curiosity, and understanding of how things work.
  • Your vision allows you to identify what's missing from a given situation, and your creativity allows you to fill in the gaps.
  • Your awareness of how things function gives you the ability to come up with new uses for common objects.
  • It is more interesting for you to pursue excitement than it is to get caught up in a routine.
  • Although understanding details is not difficult for you, you specialize in seeing the bigger picture and don't get caught up in specifics.
  • You tend to more proactive than reactive—you don't just wait for things to come to you.
  • You prefer to have time to plan for things, feeling better with a schedule than with keeping plans up in the air until the last minute.
  • Being social, empathic, and understanding makes you ADVOCATING.
  • Some people find being around others exhausting—but not you! You are energized by spending time with friends, and you are good at meeting new people.
  • One of the reasons you enjoy conversation as much as you do is that you often learn about yourself while talking things out with a friend; you realize things about your own beliefs while discussing them with others.
  • You have insight into what others are thinking and feeling. This ability allows you to be happy for others, and to commiserate when something has gone wrong for them.
  • You are highly compassionate, and being conscious of how things affect those close to you leaves you cautious about trusting others too hastily.
  • Despite these reservations, you are open-minded when it comes to your worldview; you don't look to impose your ways on others.
  • Your sensitivity towards others' plights contributes to an understanding—both intellectual and emotional—of many different perspectives.
  • As someone who understands the complexities of the world around you, you are reluctant to pass judgments.
I am not really sure how acurate this description is, sadly...
So, what about you?

Food by US-State

Jenna tweeted about this interesting food map of the USA

funny food photos - Food Map
see more My Food Looks Funny

What do you think about the representation of your state (my US readers) or the states you have visited, read about, seen on tv etc (all my readers)?

Just a few of my thoughts:
California: I was thinking citrus fruits, but I guess grapes is acurate, giving the wine production over there
Virginia: Ham - YES! That was exactly what my students recommended on our field trip, and it was delicious. Furthermore, peanuts..
New York: Pizza - oh yes, my favourite one was at Big Nick`s, 2175 Broadway (77th and Broadway). Also Burgers (also at Big Nick's!). And Hot dogs. And tons of coffee.
Illinois: Chicago-style Pizzy - sure thing.
Wisconsin: Cheese - yes, I visited a lot of dairy farms there. Good choice.
Michigan: can't really remember anything specific

What is Knoeplah btw?

New year, better year?

2010 was a very difficult year for me.

I got sick, and only after weeks and weeks of weird, wrong treatments ("why don't you just take these antibiotics for the next 8 weeks, it could be that one of the side effects will eventually help you" Ehm... nooo, thank you? I prefer not stuffing my body with AB if you are not even sure it helps, thanks.) I got a diagnosis.
I have an autoimmune disease, which means that I will have to take medication for the rest of my live and also that I have to find a good doctor wherever I move to but I think this is all manageable. I am just happy I feel better now.

Following the diagnosis, I had a difficult time accepting it and dealing with it. Unfortunately, that led to a fallout with some people around me.

At the same time, my grandmother got really sick. When I went to see her, I did not even recognize her at the first glance, she looked so different.

A few weeks later, my grandmother died.

(That's us at christmas 2007)

In fall, my father got very sick. He was operated, but after one week of getting worse instead of better they had to do an emergency operation (that was the first time in my life that I just grabbed my coat and purse, called for a taxi, bribed the taxi driver and jumped into the next train to my hometown without thinking, luggage, preparation, ticket... luckily the conductor asked no questions and just sold me a ticket on board without an extra fee). My father had to stay 2 more weeks at the intensive care unit, a terrible time for him. Afterwards, his treatments continued till after christmas. He is on a good way now, but oh so fragile, exhausted and tiny because he lost more than 10% of his body weight and is still not gaining it back.

Shortly before christmas, my mom, who was already totally stressed and worried about my dad, got a bad diagnosis herself, so now she is sick as well. She just started her treatment which will continue way into 2011 and she is having a very difficult time. She lost a lot of weigth as well (I will soon be the fatty of the family if this trend continues!). Of course you can imagine that we had a very different and difficult christmas this year.

I really hope both of them get well soon and get their strength back. Their favourite holiday (easter at the lake Garda, Italy) had to be cancelled due to my mother's illness :(
I'll keep my fingers crossed for their second favourite time: 2 summer weeks at the seaside in the Netherlands!

Please keep my family in your thoughts and prayers. After 2010, I think we earned the right to a more peaceful, healthy 2011, don't you think?

I can only wish all the best for you and all of your loved ones. After you have read this, go and give them an extra hug, ok?

Yours,
Lizzy
